Should I meet with a bariatric dietician or get bariatric surgery?

Question Below Submitted By:

Susan (a patient from Boston)

I’m wondering if I should begin working with a bariatric dietician, or should I undergo bariatric surgery due to my history of failed attempts at losing weight by diet?

I’ve put in the work to lose weight. I’ve tried Weight Watchers, Atkins Diet, vegetarian diet…. You name it. But I’ve never lost a satisfactory amount of weight.

Are there some people who can’t lose weight through diet? Why is it that my peers lose weight on diets, but I can’t seem to break-through and lose enough to make me comfortable in my own skin?

I feel like I’m doing something wrong, and maybe I’m not sticking to the diets long enough, but I get so frustrated by my inability to lose significant weight. I’m wondering if I should give diet one more shot (meet with a professional bariatric dietician), or should I meet with a bariatric surgeon?

Any advice for those of us who feel like their diets aren’t working?

Thanks,
Susan

Susan,

Unfortunately, multiple medical studies have documented that your experience with dieting is not unique: most patients who suffer from morbid obesity are not able to durably lose their excess weight without the assistance of bariatric (weight loss) surgery. That is not to say that you shouldn't attempt to lose weight through rigorous diet and exercise; a small percentage of morbidly obese patients are successful with this approach. Furthermore, following an appropriate diet and adhering to an exercise regimen will be an important component of your success WITH bariatric surgery.

My recommendation is that while you continue with your attempts at weight loss by following an appropriate diet and participating in an exercise program that you fully investigate the potential benefits of undergoing bariatric surgery to assist you in your weight loss efforts. This should include attending one or more bariatric surgery informational seminars as well as participating in bariatric surgery patient support group meetings so that you obtain the necessary information to make an informed choice to proceed with surgery as well as which bariatric surgical procedure (of which there are several) to undergo.

You will have a MUCH greater chance of ultimately being successful employing the 'tool' of bariatric surgery to assist you in your efforts to conquer your morbid obesity!
