Pre-Op Testing for Weight Loss Surgery: What to Expect

Question Below Submitted By:

Julie (a patient from Lancaster, SC)

Help! I am going tomorrow afternoon for my pre-op testing, and my weight loss surgery is scheduled for 9/14. I have no idea how many or what types of test they need to do at this appointment, but they said to expect to be there roughly 3 hrs.

I know they will do blood work, but I haven’t been able to get a hold of anyone at the lab so I’m not sure if I need to fast for that testing or not. My appointment is at 1pm tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll be pretty hungry by then.

I’m also not sure if I should take my normal meds for blood persure and GERD either. Please let me know what I should do.

Also, in your experience, what are all the tests that they typically perform in this appointment? Three hours seems like a long time.

Thank you,
Julie

Surgeon response to "Pre-Op Testing for Weight Loss Surgery: What to Expect"

by: John Rabkin, MD

Julie,

Pre-op laboratory testing varies greatly between bariatric programs and surgeons.

At a minimum, most will require basic serum electrolytes and hematologic tests as well as an EKG and a chest x-ray, but beyond those basic tests, the 'sky's the limit!"

Testing could include any number of additional blood tests as well as other more elaborate investigations, possibly including upper endoscopy, upper GI radiaologic studies, sleep studies to test for obstructive sleep apnea, pH monitoring studies to investigate for reflux and testing for H pylori, among others.

For your visit, I would not expect that your surgeon/bariatric program would want you to be fasting for your afternoon appointment. I also think that you should take all of your routine medications unless/until specifically instructed to the contrary.

However, I would ask your bariatric surgeon/program directly what they expect of you: the proactive, prepared patient makes for a successful outcome!

Best regards,

Pre-op appointment

Hello my name is Lisa. I wanted to know the next step to my bariatric surgery. I have completed almost everything, I only have to do my EKG and blood work. What's the next step to my getting my surgery done and what's the waiting process after all of the doctor requests are done?
