I underwent a lap band procedure 2 and a half years ago. I lost only 7 kg and regained the weight back. Now I have knee problems and back problems and I can’t climb stairs or walk for a while or stand for long periods of time.
It affects my job so badly that I can’t move from the bed in morning every day. It puts me under such severe stress that I eat a high fat and sugar diet and causes persistent vomiting.
I adjusted the band 3 times and couldn’t eat any protein like meat or fish or poultry. I transferred myself to soft eating but it was high caloric, then after 2 years of suffering I ended that by deflating the band.
Since then I have heartburn and difficulty swallowing and right-sided pain.
I am 28 year old female working as pulmonary and critical care physician. I am 165 cm tall (5′ 5′) and weigh 107 kg (235 lbs).
I really need help. I am thinking about gastric bypass or mini gastric bypass or duodenal switch. I can’t going through another failed procedure… I need a long-term solution. Thank you.
Answer: Long Term Solution after Failed Lap Band

Hello,
Unfortunately your experience with the band is not that uncommon. Given that this restrictive procedure did not work for you, converting it to a malabsorbic procedure like the DS or bypass is the best alternative in my opinion.
Deciding which procedure to have done is a personal decision that is best decided by speaking with your surgeon and going over the pros and cons of each surgery.
There is no perfect weight loss surgery, unfortunately. You need to decide what you think will work best for you. I personally do not recommend the Mini Gastric bypass to my patients; I recommend either the DS or the full RNY Gastric Bypass. The DS has better long term weight loss results but you need to consider the commitment you have to make when having this surgery as it is a highly malabsorbic procedure, thus the excellent weight loss results.
