Surgeon Response to "Gastric Sleeve Effect on Lazy Bowel Syndrome"

by: John Rabkin, MD

Richard,

I'm not certain what the medical definition of "lazy bowel syndrome" is but I assume that you have some type of intestinal dysmotility disorder.

If that is the case, then a vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), which only consists of surgically reducing the capacity of your stomach but does not involve altering your intestinal anatomy, should be an acceptable and appropriate bariatric surgical intervention for you if you're morbidly obese.

The resulting weight loss may actually lessen/improve some of the symptoms of your intestinal motility disorder as well.

Best regards,
John Rabkin, M.D. Pacific Laparoscopy
