Cramp where port is and feeling full of gas

Question Below Submitted By:

Alysia Nelson (a patient from Temecula, CA)

I had my lap band in San Diego (Dr. Bhoyrul) in 2010. I have recently been feeling a contraction of the muscle or stomach where my band is. I have also been feeling very filled with gas and have pains if I eat anything at all. This has been only the last week. The gas pains are so intense and move around my abdomen from my rib cage to my lower stomach.
Anyone have something like this?

Surgeon Response - Could be a LapBand "Slippage"

by: John Rabkin, M.D., Pacific Laparoscopy

Dear LapBand patient,

The symptoms that you are having are suggestive of 'slippage' of your LapBand which, if confirmed, is a very serious problem that requires immediate evaluation by a trained surgeon.

In some circumstances when the band slips, it can stop the blood flow to part of your stomach which will then die and, if left untreated, can be fatal to you.

You should IMMEDIATELY seek medical attention for these symptoms to confirm that the band hasn't slipped; if it has slipped, it must be promptly surgically removed or, possibly, repositioned.
