My husband and I will be taking care of our 32-year old son after roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery and are trying to learn as much as possible. He is 5′ 10′ and weighs about 300 lbs. He will be having the surgery in a few weeks.
I printed out what he can eat so we can get everything he’ll need ahead of time and not have to leave him alone.
The blood clot possibility worries us, just wanted to know how long after surgery this might happen.
Would it be safe to leave him alone for short periods, let’s say a week after surgery?
Thank you so much for any help you can give.
Surgeon response to "Risk of Blood Clots After Gastric Bypass Surgery"
by: John Rabkin, MD
Ellie,
Blood clots (deep venous thromboses or DVTs) are a known risk of any surgical procedure including the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RGB).
The greatest risk associated with a DVT is that it could migrate to the lungs causing a pulmonary embolus (PE) which can be fatal.
However, the risk is very small and most surgeons employ a combination of early post operative ambulation/mobilization, lower extremity sequential compression devices, and pharmacologic means including subcutaneous heparin administration or systemic anti-coagulation to mitigate the small risk.
In the absense of a known hypercoaguable state, venal caval filters are not routinely utilized. The risk of a DVT/PE is primarily during the surgical procedure itself and the first 4 to 6 weeks of recovery after surgery.
I anticipate that it would be safe to leave your son alone for periods of time after his surgery providing that he's not experiencing any complications from the surgery.
