Gastric sleeve surgery with esophagus problems

by Linda
(Oakdale, CT)

My doctors thought I had achlasia (disorder of the esophagus which affects the ability to move food toward the stomach), but it was ruled out by a barium study - one with liquids and one with the pill. I passed both tests but have some problems with scattered tertiary esophageal contractions and mild intermittent spasm of the lower sphincter.

I'm getting an esophageal manometry test next (test is used to measure the function of the lower esophageal sphincter (the valve that prevents reflux of gastric acid into the esophagus) and the muscles of the esophagus).

No masses, ulcers, or strictures were seen nor can any significant reflux be demonstrated. A small hiatal hernia is also suspected.

I so want to get the gastric sleeve operation and was approved by my insurance... I am 5' 1" and weigh about 285 pounds.

What are the odds that I will be able to have surgery?

Keeping my fingers crossed for you NEW
by: Maryann

I'm praying your doctor will approve the surgery. Since I have had my bariatric susrgery (down 115 lbs) I am feeling so much better. If I had realized I would have felt this good, I would have done it sooner.

Consult Next NEW
by: Lap BAND GROUPIE (The Sweet Spot)

Hi Linda! I'm not sure how this will effect your plans for WLS, but I'm sure your first step would be to meet with a Bariatric Surgeon (consult visit), as well as talk with your Gastroenterologist. I'd suggest you go to one that does several types of surgeries as they may feel that another surgery is a better option for you (i.e. the Lap Band is reversible). Also, I know many WLS patients who have had their hernia's repaired at the time of their WLS, so that's good news for you. I'm not sure what your initial symptoms were that sparked all the testing, but in case it was reflux, I'd say as many people have had their's get better after WLS as have had it get worse. I never had reflux until my WLS, but it's under control since I had a band adjustment (made it a little looser, it's a great thing that it's adjustable). Good luck with everything, and keep us posted! -BG

Response NEW
by: Jeff on behalf of Dr. Gregg Jossart

Hi there,

I just received the following message from Dr. Jossart (one of Bariatric Surgery Source's Advisory Council members) regarding your question:

"Sleeve is OK to proceed with but the hiatal hernia must be repaired."

I hope that helps!

Take care,

Jeff

Thanks for all your comments and talking to other doctors for me... I am so looking forward to losing weight. The doctors I have, don't require you to lose weight before surgery but I am trying to watch what I eat. I do have some splurges sometimes... but I know what I will be in for if I do stupid things like that after surgery.thank you again for all your comments and I will write soon and give you updates. Thanks again, Linda
